Third Big Cat Experience

While I was working at a nursing home situated at Milford, I was doing a stint of night shifts, at this time I didn't own a car at all so was forced to push bike to work. Now it was a long 7 mile journey for me to get from home to work and it was along the A513 which is unlit for most of the journey.

One night during the week as I was push biking to work i had gone past the Wolselley Arms pub and was just coming up the A513 when I heard a "commotion" in the forest to my left. I thought at the time that maybe I had startled a heard of Deer from grazing and that was what the sound was, so I carried on riding down the road to work.

After a few hundred yards i could hear the sound of something in the forest moving parallel to me as I moved up the road. If I speeded up so did the noise, I thought that maybe someone was having a joke on my behalf. As I came out of the forest and the ground to my left gave way to grassy areas I couldn't hear no see anything there. However once we were back into the trees the noise resumed and carried on till I came to the Dog Boarding Kennels where the noise finally stopped. I do remember the dogs there barking but they did that most nights anyway, so didn't think anything about it.

I was pretty sure I could ride a bike faster then most people can run while being hindered by the trees/bushes. I must say that this was more scary then anything else that had happened to me. But apart from the noise there was nothing else that happened, which I think looking back at it made it all the worst cause if something had happened. As the imagination can think of lots of bad things due to lack of evidence.

A few weeks later as I was leaving work to ride home I used a short-cut through the forest to save myself time in the daylight. As I was taking the short-cut down towards the main road I came across a tree that had pieces of bark missing and claw marks on it. The highest claw marks stood at about 5 - 6 ft high. You couldn't miss the marks as you travelled down the path they was that evident. The spread of the claws was about as big as a mans hands and a good centimetre deep, unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me at the time as I was at work!

So I thought about getting some pictures the next down however by the time I had been to work and checked the area again the bark had been "cleaned", this was the last straw for me and I decided that push biking to work was no longer safe and invested in getting myself a small motorbike instead.

Second Big Cat Experience

A few years later when I had moved into my own place and got married I lived a lot closer to Cannock chase and we had got ourselves a pet dog this meant of course that said Dog needed walking! As we lived close to Cannock Chase I started taking the dog walking over there.

I had heard from various people that the Forestry Commission was covering up facts about Deer being killed over the Chase. I'm assuming this was do to with poaching or "Big Cats" I doubt we will ever know as asking the Forestry Commission just gets a blank look and a "no such thing going on" comment, which is to be expected as either of those things would cause loss in revenue and they wouldn't want that.
I had heard that Rangers were finding Deer that had been mauled and partially eaten, not a surprise really as there was at least one "Big Cat" that I had seen myself. Again enquires got nowhere with the Forestry Commission. Let's face it they were never going to say that Deer were being mauled as that would mean something was loose and dangerous on the Chase.

Many times as my dog and I was walking over the Chase the dog would refuse to go down certain trails and sections of the Chase, this often meant we had to take detours around areas to get back to the car. The dog was friendly and got on well with other dogs and people. He wouldn't even bother if we was close to Deer he would wait for me to catch him up before moving off. This suggested to me the dog was either scared of something or was protecting me by not putting me in harms way.

Now there can't be much to scare a dog. So the question would be how many dogs would be scared of a big cat? That was the question that always came to me every time the dog refused to go down a path. It was quite scary sometimes when we had wandered a fair distance and it was going dusk.

I never saw anything but a few times I could see bushes and smaller tress swaying as if they had been knocked by something. I had also heard a few low level "coughs" in a deep voice.

My First Big Cat Experience

Back around the middle to late 90's there was reports of Big Cats just starting to surface on Cannock Chase. I know there was probable some from earlier then this but being young I wasn't really bothered about it then. Feeling brave like teenage lads do we deceided to go looking for the "Big Cat" to see if we could get a glimpse of it. Many hours of an evening and a night were spent out on Cannock Chase looking for it. We would wander the Chase by moonlight some nights hoping to catch a glimpse of something.

When I did finally see the "Big Cat" it was just off the junction of camp road and chase road, on the right and side where the fist pull in is. The location is very popular with the public as at the time alot of food was thrown on the clear bank in-front of the pulling to entice the deer to feed in full view of the public.
I believe that the deer coming to this area every-night was what drew the "Big Cat" into this area as it was rich with prey. Needless to say the experience was a shock as even though I was after seeing one I never really expected to! It was after this that I started to carry a camera around in the hopes of getting a photograph of the "Big Cat".

As the months went by there were more sightings of the "Big Cat" but most of them like my own sighting was never reported. For myself the idea of reporting a sighting made me feel slightly stupid, so I didn't report it. It did make me start looking into the subject more though. Lots more hours was then spent looking for the cat as having seen it once I was desperate to get some proof it was really there. But as these animals are adapted to living in the wild and hunting food without the prey knowing it's there, more often then not I felt the hunted not the hunter. After a few months of searching being a teenager took back over and I started spending more time doing other things!

Big Cat Sightings

For years now there have been reports of these cats roaming round the countryside, some people believe they exist some don't believe. As for myself I'm a firm believer in them, I have joined some websites to read up on the sightings and have even had a sighting myself (You'll find more on that in another article).

There seems to be a lot of activity now and more sightings being reported all the time, the evidence though is proving harder to get even though sightings are going up. I believe that as time is going on the Big Cats are getting used to our habits and altering their own to compensate, hence the problem getting solid evidence. We do have to remember that these Big Cats are hunters and experts at moving in cover and keeping themselves from being seen.

I have spent many hours in the daylight and early evenings looking for signs and just tracking the wild deer that lived in our local forest hoping to see the cat take one for a meal. I've also spent time looking from vantage points too, just incase I can get a good picture/video of a Big Cat. Due to major changes in my life I have been unable for the last couple of years to get out and continue my pastime of hunting for evidence. That doesn't mean I've lost interest just means a change of approach is required!

I'm eager to get back into looking for evidence as it would also benefit my health to be out and about, but rather then go on my own I would rather be out in a small group doing it. If looked for local groups into this but can't find any which does surprise me. If you know of a group then please let me have the details so I can contact them!

I did once contact a National Group about starting a group in the area and they suggested to me that too many people looking for "Big Cats" might scare them away from feeding in one area to often or worse could cause someone to actually hunt the animals down for "fame & fortune". Why they think this way is beyond me as anyone seeking fame and fortune is going to go looking for them anyway regardless of its in a group or a hunting trip.

As for myself and this hopefully goes for the true "Big Cat Enthusiasts", I just want to get photographic evidence and maybe the bones/carcass of a big cat that died under natural causes, so we can prove once and for all that these animals do exist and put to rest the myths that are now growing from the lack of evidence.

As for me, personally I will still keep an eye out for the elusive Big Cat as sooner or later it will show itself and as I get back to my old routine in this area I'll hopefully come across more information and sightings again. There has been many sightings so far in 2010 in the local area and I have very high hopes that there might be more then one Big Cat here and that they are having to go further afield to find food.

If anyone else is interested in joining myself or just fancy's a chat about their sightings then please join my Forum as I have started a section that relates to Big Cat sightings and would love it if more people who are interested in them would join or please use my Contact form HERE to send me a message.
